Top 20%, "Radiant", 84: a plain-English glossary for face rating results
If you have ever taken an online face rating and wondered what the output really says, this glossary covers the terms in one place. It is written for adults 18+ and uses the Free Attractiveness Test as the worked example, because its scale and wording are published openly.
Score
A single number from 60 to 99, with 80 as the middle. It is a statement about one photo. Lighting, angle and expression all change it, so the number can move between photos, which is expected rather than a malfunction.
Band
A name for a ten-point stretch of the scale:
- Natural Charm: 60–69
- Glowing: 70–79
- Radiant: 80–89
- Dazzling: 90–99
Bands exist because a digit invites over-reading. The difference between 79 and 80 is one point, even though the band name changes.
Top X%
Shown only when a photo lands in the upper half. "Top 20%" means the photo scored higher than 80% of the portraits in the comparison set. It is a position inside a reference set, not a ranking of you against people you know.
Correlation (0.84 and about 0.6)
Developers check a scorer by asking how closely it agrees with the average of many human raters. A correlation of 1 would be a perfect match and 0 would be no relationship. For this tool the figure is 0.84 on faces it never saw while learning, and about 0.6 on a harder, more varied set. Both numbers are worth reading together: strong agreement in good conditions, noticeably weaker when photos and faces vary widely.
Highlights
Beyond the score, the tool measures simple proportions such as eye spacing and jaw width, compares each with a broad mix of people, and names the three that stand out most. They are descriptions, not part of the score, and they only ever name what works on a face.
"Same photo, same score"
The scoring is deterministic: upload the same file twice and you get the same result. If you want a different number, you need a different photo, not a retry.
What the glossary cannot cover
The score describes one photo, not a person. Read a result as one reading of one photograph, nothing more. More detail on the method, including its limits, is on the how it works page.
